Update: It took 6 days after submission to be accepted by NJ State.
I filed on April 14th...should I be concerned it is still pending? NY and federal were accepted right away but not NJ!
Based on my experience and all of the information that I've read from other posts: no, no need to be concerned. Pending status just means that they have received it and that they have yet to accept it into processing. Jersey tends to be late to the game in comparison to the other states (I filed on the 8th and it took 6 days). Since you've filed before April 18th, you are on time.
I spoke with a Turbo Tax advisor who said the date the State will go by is the date you file...so as long as you submitted by 4/18 you should be OK...coincidently my NJ return was approved a few hours (and roughly five days after NY and Fed) after calling
I just spoke with someone at the NJ number and she said they don't have it listed as being received yet even though Turbotax says it was filed! She said it may take 4 weeks to process! That's never happened before so I think her response is inaccurate!
Been over a week for me since E-filing with turbotax deluxe desktop. My IRS Return received green "Accepted" status within 24 hours, but NJ State Return has had a blue "Pending" status for over week. Never had a problem in 30 years of using turbotax, or prior 16 years of E-filing, so not expecting a problem. Nevertheless, it's disconcerting that it isn't showing up as "Accepted."
I just contacted the state (NJ) - (It really depends on who at the state you speak with.)
I'm still in "pending" status since 4/18/22 when I e-filed both State and Fed returns. (My Fed return was "accepted" within 2 hours of e-filing.) The rep said she cannot see my return status until processing has been started.
She did say they were slammed on the weekend... 4/15, 4/16 and 4/17 and very heavy on the 18th which was the deadline.
Bottom line.... it depends on when and how you filed and to remain patient - could possibly take weeks. She did say that "pending" means the tax return was transmitted from Turbotax --- But I still question that statement to a degree. I don't know if expecting a refund or owing money has any bearing on the initial
"acceptance" (or rejection) and the processing times.
What is the telephone number in New Jersey State to ask about "pending" status of my return after more than 100 hours? I called a couple of numbers and received nothing but recorded messages. How do you get a live person to talk to?

No one in the New Jersey Division of Taxation would know anything about your tax return since it has not yet been received by the state. They cannot see a Pending tax return.
The state has processes for receiving tax returns and usually with all the returns sent just prior to the due date of the returns there is going to be a delay before the tax return is either accepted or rejected.
I owe money to them and I'm still in "pending" status since the morning of Sunday, April 16. IRS not only processed my Federal return but also withdrew money from my bank account.
Would you please tell me what number you called in New Jersey to be able to talk to a live agent?
Thanks!
Hi Mohan,
This happened to me last year and when I posted the number the moderators removed it. I used the main number from this link:
https://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/
3 times out of 4, I got a message which said they were too busy and to call back later. I just kept redialing and then I got a message with a menu of options. I chose "personal income taxes" and then "where is my refund". It then took about 5 minutes of wait time before a person answered.
They were very nice and helpful. They explained that there were 2 systems and that pending meant it was in the initial system but had not been exported to the main system for processing. They said not to worry and to wait. About 1/2 hour after my call my return was accepted. I know it's stressful but it will probably just take time because they are swamped with returns. Mine took 5 days last year. Good luck.
