My husband's residency has been approved and he will be receiving a SSN within the next couple of weeks. Can I amend our 2020 tax return to include his new SSN?

In lieu of his ITIN?

If you did not file yet, you should change to the SSN.

If you already filed, then maybe.  There are certain tax benefits that are only available to taxpayers with SSNs.  You must file an "on time" return with the SSN to claim the benefit.  If you filed with the ITIN, then for your return with SSN to be "on time", you must submit an amended return by April 15.

However, we can't actually tell you if you would get any benefit from the SSN until you prepare the amended return as a test.  If it shows no difference, you don't need to file it.  If it does show a difference, you will want to amend.  You will need amend by mail (not e-filed) and attach a letter explaining the change from ITIN to SSN and include a copy of your notice from the social security administration.
