Given that the IRS has contacted you regarding their requirement that you verify your identity, your tax file (all of your information with them) most likely is being held in what the IRS sometimes refers to as a "safety queue" and will hold all of your information there until they've received the verification information from you that they are requesting. It is truly for your own safety. I would not suggest you re-file your 2018 return if, in fact, you received in prior notification of acceptance and processing.
Thank you for your response. I did verify my identity with the IRS in late 2018, and thought everything was set. But then I was looking at my IRS account online yesterday and it says, "Your 2018 Tax Return Has Not Been Processed and the Due Date Has Passed." I guess I should just call them to find out what the problem is.
