Massachusetts E-file fee

In Massachusetts it's free to mail in a return but it costs $25 to e-file.  What is up with that?!?!  It's completely backwards.

You can print and mail your return for free.  It costs to e-file your return.  You are not using the e-file program so you don't have to pay.  You have paid to prepare your returns but how you choose to file them is up to you.

E-filing fee in desktop software

Did you purchase desktop software with state software included?  They sell Deluxe both with and without state software--so you have to be careful which one you choose.  And even if it does have the state software download included, that is for preparing the state.  There is an extra fee to e-file the state. Before March 1 that fee is $20; after March 1 it increases to $25.  You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead of e-filing it.

I was charged $64 for state tax, that is ridiculous. I looked up online, it charges $39 per state

@sdfaoisdf At the beginning of the tax season the online TurboTax fees were lower.  They increased on March 1 and increased again on April 1.
