Mailed in my amended tax returns for the last 2 years in Feb. 2019. My e-file status says that the IRS has accepted them but there's no record of them on the IRS site.

Does that mean that the returns are still being processed or does it mean that they haven't even received them yet? They sent one of them back 3 weeks after I mailed them for a missing signature (which I immediately signed and sent back).

I can't tell what tax years you are referring to by "last 2 years."   The current tax year people are filing is 2018, so I don't know if you mean 2018 and 2017, or 2017 and 2016.

In any case, if your Online account shows the two returns were accepted, that is the efile status for the original returns.  If you later amended them, you cannot go by that anymore.  Your account will always show the efile status for the original returns.

There is no such thing as an efile status for an amended return, since it has to be printed and mailed.  So you cannot use any efile status in your online account to check on it.

It can take the IRS up to 16 weeks to process an amended return.

You said you couldn't find evidence at the IRS website.   Are you using this tool at the IRS to check on them?  Do not use the regular "Where's My Refund" too.  Use this one instead:

"Where's My Amended Return?"
https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

If your 2 amended returns are not showing up there,  you can phone the IRS to see if they can tell you anything.   The IRS will be really busy this week.

IRS:  800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri

Listen to each menu before making the selection.

First choose your language. Press 1 for English.

  • Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent, but there is likely to be a long wait.
I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.

Sorry, I meant 2016-2017 taxes. Thank you clarifying the e-file status. I was very confused about that, as well, since I knew the amended returns had to be mailed. The IRS sent one of the returns back for a signature 3 weeks after I mailed them, so I am assuming they've been received. I check the Where's My Amended return tool everyday and there's still no record of anything. I'll use that number you've provided and call tomorrow. I always make the mistake of pressing the first choice "Refund" when I call and obviously that has never helped. Now I know to press 2. Thank you so much for your help!

You're welcome.  The IRS will be very busy tomorrow.
