I amended my 2016 tax return. I claimed husband daughter on accident. Now I owe and says to send payment with the amendment. Why is it saying this?

It was her mother's year to claim. We are now owing the irs $1,405. I don't have this money right now to send the irs with my amended return.

Amended returns can be very confusing!

The reason you owe taxes on the amended return is because on your original return you claimed a deduction for your step-daughter that you shouldn’t have claimed.  So, in effect, on your amended return, your income and therefore, your taxes have increased. 

If you originally had a refund and now you owe, the net of the two numbers is what you would have received or owed if you had filed the original return without claiming your husband’s daughter.

Okay thank you. So technically I do not have to send this $1,405 check with the amendement that I am printing out to send back? Will it just be taking out of the original amount? Sorry never amended before so a little confused.

I would wait until you receive your original refund before mailing.  And yes, unfortunately, you do need to send a check for the $1405.  Please be sure to enter 1040X and the principal taxpayer's social security number (the first person listed) on the memo line on your check.

That's what I was wondering. I can send in my amended forms tomorrow but definitely don't have the $1,405 right now to send with the forms. Thank you for your help!
