IRS wants me to change my tax filling status to single.

I got a letter today from the IRS stating that they want me to change my filing status to single for the 2021 tax year, even though I qualify for Head of Household and have been filing like that for some time now. They want me to pay a fee. My refund is on hold until I do so. If I comply with this despite the fact that I qualify for Head of House, will they go back and audit my previous filings? They had audited me earlier this year to prove I was eligible for the child tax credits. I provided more than enough information for that, but now they have notified me that I need to change my filing status because they have determined I don't qualify. I am unmarried and pay for 100 percent of my kids' expenses. What should I do in this situation?

Are you the custodial parent?   Do the children live with you?

My children live permanently with me all the time.  I sent proof of that as well during the original audit.

I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE

TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.

AUDIT SUPPORT

TurboTax has a special phone number for help with IRS/state tax letters, which will be easier than going through regular Customer Support.   At the page below, click on the blue button that says "Get Help from TurboTax Support".  Then it will ask you what tax year is your letter.  Then it will ask you what the letter concerns. Then it will show you the phone number during posted business hours.

@JoseR654

You have to respond in writing that you dispute the IRS change and you qualify for HOH filing status.

Send to the address shown in your letter from the IRS.

Then wait some more.

Call your Congressperson's office, they will help you.
