IRS Notice CP53

Received an IRS Notice CP53 two years in a row now.  I always e-file both Federal and State and for over 20 years I always have the refunds direct deposited.  The last two years the State refund gets direct deposited and both years the Federal refund gets mailed as a check. About a week later after getting the Federal refund check I get this Notice CP53.

The routing number and account number is the same on both the Federal and State returns.

The Notice says "We had to do some additional processing on your tax return". Further they say "You should receive a refund check in the mail within 4 weeks".

Any thoughts on what is going on?

Who can I contact to see what additional processing is being done and if there is something I need to do going forward so the refund can be direct deposited again as it had been up until these last 2 years.

I haven't got a reliable answer. or a solution, to this discussion nor another discussion I started. Both issues occured the last 2 years after over 30 years using TurboTax and e-filing both Federal and State each year without issue...

Our tax returns for many years, always include the same 1099-R''s, 1099-INT's. Social Security, and monthly retirement payments. We always take the Standard Deduction. The only change is the dollar amounts of each.

My best guess is that the Oklahoma State e-file data lacks something required by the state. They require a copy of the 1099-R, 1099-INT, or others that show that witholding taxes were collected. The TurboTax Oklahoma does not have an option to give this what they require (copy of the mentioned forms).  Thus I get a letter to provide them or I could be subject to an audit.  2 Years now I get this letter.

On the Fedseral TurboTax e-file the last 2 years I get a letter that the return needed further processing thus they could not direct deposit the refund. Both years I received the refund check in the mail and then a week later I get this letter from them.

Both Federal and State tax returns e-file had the exact Routing Number and Account Number I have used for 30 years and direct deposit was newver an issue until the psast 2 years and only with the Federal refund.

Bottom line my guess is that TurboTax should look into this as it seems to be e-file related and tweaking is neessary.

If the account information is correct, then your IRS deposits could be getting rejected due to a name mismatch.  The name on the account must match the name on the return.  It could also be that your bank is rejecting your direct deposit.  You could try contacting your bank to see if there are any issues with your account that may be causing the rejection.  You could also use a different bank account on your next tax return.

The same info has been on the return for 30 years. Bank account same for 32 years. Same info on State return and direct deposit was made for the State Refund without issue.

If your bank can't explain what's causing it, then since it's the IRS doing the sending of the check, you can ask them how they explain it and what they mean by "additional processing."   Is there a special phone number on your IRS notice?   Otherwise, here's the main IRS number:

IRS: 800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

THX for the number. Will call them.

At the very bottom of the notice it says in a small font:  Internal Use Only  18F.  Initial seasrch I made seems to be that another division which deals with making the returns easier to file may have got in the mix but I need to reesearch further.

It's odd, since the IRS is trying to avoid sending checks by mail.  The IRS does allow you to enter your bank information in the link below and receive your deposit for your 2025 tax return.  Both links will provide details about the process.

As far as your Oklahoma (OK) refund, some states do require the mailing of certain documents and they all vary as to which documents. It usually has to do with documents other than W-2s with state withholding included.
