IRS did not receive e-file that Turbotax submitted and confirmed

We filed our federal and state taxes using Tubotax Premium on 4/14/2023.  We received confirmation from Turbotax that our Federal tax returns had been accepted by the IRS the same day.  Five weeks later, we received a letter from the IRS telling us they had not received all the information required and requesting that we mail or fax them the first two pages of the 1040s along with our W2s again.  All of this information was already submitted with our original Turbotax filing.  Nothing new was requested.

We sent the documents via digital fax and confirmed successful transmission in early May, 2023.  We waited six weeks per the letter before following up with the IRS about the status of the returns.  When we finally got an IRS agent on the phone, they advised us that the documents we faxed them had been misplaced, but they found them and our return status online finally changed from "not filed" to "received."

It is now 12/21,2023 and the status at the IRS is still "pending."  We spoke to an IRS agent again in early December.  The agent advised us that they could not see anything in our file, meaning they did not receive the original return ("successfully confirmed" by TurboTax) and he instructed us to wait a few more weeks and call back ( each call takes at least an hour and jumping through the right hoops to not get hung up on by the IRS) then to possibly file the taxes again if they weren't processed by then.

These are the simplest tax returns you can file.  W2 income only with the standard deduction.  While we won't ever be able to get an honest answer from Turbotax or the IRS about who dropped the ball on the original filing in April, since Turbotax is the entity that submitted the taxes, we are inclined to believe it is something wrong with their submission to the IRS.  We are requesting Turbotax assist us with the IRS since it has been 8.5 months since we filed the returns with Turbotax and the IRS has yet to process our returns or refund.

The Turbotax website makes it near impossible to speak with an agent, so we are posing this instead.  We will not be using Turbotax again in the future if they cannot help us sort out this simple issue with the IRS.

TurboTax won't help you.

The Taxpayer Advocate won't help you unless you are in hardship, or

you go through your U.S. Congress Representative first.
