If you indicated direct deposit for your refund on your 1040 and you received a check instead, then the IRS had a problem in depositing your refund. Possibly your bank account number or your bank routing number was incorrect.

If you included your direct deposit information but the deposit was sent back to the IRS from your bank, the IRS will then send a check.
