Identity Protection PIN

Took me a while to find it in my TT premiere.

Hitting the search "button" and then typing "IP PIN" in the search bar did not provide the expected results.

Instead, clicking on "Search Topics", typing "IP PIN", selecting "IP protection PIN", jump to -- did the trick.

Small but important difference "Search Bar" vs. "Search Topics"

This is a public Internet forum.  You should not post any personal info in this public forum.  You can edit your posting above to remove it.  To do that, click the tiny blue 3-dot icon just to the right of your comment and click "Edit."

Is that a 6-digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) provided by the IRS to certain victims of ID theft or those who opted-in to that program?   If so, why are you posting the IP PIN here in the public user community forum?   What do you need to know?  Do you want to know where to enter it in your return?

If you're wanting to know where to enter it, here are 3 ways to get to the right place to enter the IP PIN.  You only need to use one method.   You can choose which method works for you the best.

  • Open your return inteview, then click in the top right on SEARCH.
  • Enter the term IP PIN without quotes.  When entering, ignore the dropdown menu, and instead click the small magnifying glass on that same line.
  • Then click on Jump to IP PIN.

Or here's a second way (Online TurboTax only) :

  • With your return open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter the term IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.

Or here's a third navigation method (Online TurboTax) :

  • With your return open, in the left menu column, click Federal.
  • Then at the top of the screen choose  Other Tax Situation
  • If this is your first time in that section, answer the preliminary questions, and it may ask you if you have an IP PIN.  If so, indicate "yes", and keep following the screens as it guides you to enter it.
  • If it doesn't, such as if you've previously been in that section, click on "See all uncommon tax situations" to see all the topics in that section.
  • In the "Uncommon tax situations" list, scroll down to Other Return Info, and expand to see the subtopics, one of which is Identity Protection PIN.

You haven't said anything about your situation and what you are wanting to do.    Since you chose a topic about IP PIN to post your question, I'll assume that is your issue.   If the IRS requires you to use a 6-digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN), that is NOT entered in the efiling section.  The 5-digit self-select PIN that you are asked to enter during efiling (where you choose the 5 digits) is something different.

We also don't know if you are using Online TurboTax or desktop software (CD/download).  I've provided the methods to enter an IP PIN below for both the CD and online versions.

Method for CD/download version:

  • Click the Federal tab (Personal tab in Home and Business edition)
  • Subtab Other Tax Situations.
  • Scroll down to topic Other Return Info.
  • Choose subtopic Identity Protection PIN, and Start or Update.

Another way (may work in both desktop and online versions) :

  • Open your return interview, then click in the top right on the SEARCH icon.
  • Enter the term IP PIN without quotes.  When entering that phrase, ignore the dropdown menu, and instead click the small magnifying glass on that same line.
  • Then click on Jump to IP PIN.

Or here's another way (Online TurboTax only) :

  • With your return open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter the term IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.

Or here's a direct navigation method  for Online TurboTax) :

  • With your return open, in the left menu column, click Federal.
  • Then at the top of the screen choose  Other Tax Situations
  • If this is your first time in that section, answer the preliminary questions, and it may ask you if you have an IP PIN.  If so, indicate "yes", and keep following the screens as it guides you to enter it.
  • If it doesn't, such as if you've previously been in that section, click on "See all uncommon tax situations" to see all the topics in that section.
  • In the "Uncommon tax situations" list, scroll down to Other Return Info, and expand to see the subtopics, one of which is Identity Protection PIN.

Identity Protection PIN

I figured this all out, mostly because it's the second year in a row I forgot to set the PIN before filing, so had to set it and refile. It's not in the normal flow so it's easy to miss. It would be nice if when importing, TurboTax could import the fact I had a PIN last year, and prompt me for it this year, or maybe just always prompt for it with "I don't have one" as an option.

Identity Protection PIN

This is why I went with HR Block...  I have a 6 diget PIN ID but Turbo Tax wants a 5 diget.

I see the link to put a personal PIN ID but it is  not taking me there.

Identity Protection PIN

So how did you fix it?

How were you able to create your PIN ID?

Identity Protection PIN

@mwillison56

TurboTax, HRB does not matter.  The 5 digit PIN is one you self-select to e-file the tax return.

The 6 digit IP PIN is received from the IRS because you reported an ID theft at one point in the past.  The IRS will send you the IP PIN every year from now on to enter on your tax return.

Whichever tax preparation software you use - the 6 digit IP PIN will be entered somewhere in the program Not associated with the e-file 5 digit PIN.

In TurboTax -

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin
