I was expecting a fed return of $4500. i used turbo tax last year my wife passed away so i amended my taxes. from married filing joint to qualifying widower. refund $0

i received my state but federal said i don't owe and no return no letter nothing our . from $4500 to 0

Very sorry for your loss.   We need more information.   When you say your spouse passed away----what tax year are you referring to?    For the tax year in which a spouse dies, you can still file a joint return.   How did you file for the year in which she passed away?

 

The status of qualifying widow(er) is only used for the two years AFTER a spouse passes away and only IF you still have dependent qualifying children to claim on your return.
