This would most likely be your W-4, which is a form your employer uses to figure out how much taxes to take out of your checks. Simply put, the more dependants you claim on your W-4 the less taxes they pull. Usually for a single person with no kids if you claim 1 on your w4 then you wont owe taxes and should either get no refund or a small refund... I always claimed 0 on my w4 so they took more taxes out so I would get a big refund every year... That being said, if you earn very little income and that's your only income your employer might have put you down for minimal taxes on your w4 figuring that you would make less than the $12k minimum required before the gov keeps any tax from you if you made less than the federal minimum for the year you'd owe no taxes, so whatever you piad would be coming back to you. On a final note, there's always the chance your employer made a mistake on your w2, if you have pay stubs that show they took more taxes than your w2 states, then you should have them issue you a new w2 with correct numbers 🙂
