I put the wrong name on form 8917.

I attended college full-time last year but submitted form 8917 with my husband’s name as a student name by mistake.

We filed jointly so the deduction amount is same; but I am worried that we got tuition deductions for his name (who wasn’t a student) instead of my name. What should I do?

If you have already filed the tax return, I would just make a note to yourself about what happened in the file where you keep your tax records. Sometimes it can be years before they ask about something, and you may not remember by then!  Also, by default, it may be assigned to him next year in TurboTax and this will remind you to change it next year.

If an inquiry is made, you can then explain the clerical error at that time.  These sorts of things happen, and they're not a big deal. I assure you that you are not the first person to mislabel something like this on a tax return and as you pointed out, the end result is the same and that's honestly the more important factor.

I wouldn't let this one keep you up at night, it's not a big deal!
