I and my wife live in different states ( FL and IL ) and your electronic state return filed us jointly based on the FED status, but we need to separate out and file 1040x so that my wife is shown as resident and I am not.

Once you have filed your tax return as Married Filing Joint (MFJ), you CANNOT amend your filing status after the April 15th deadline for either your federal or your Illinois return.
