I’m trying to find the status of my amended tax refund?

How do I find out the status of my federal and state income tax return? I can’t use where’s my refund because I don’t know how much is my return?

If you are indeed needing the status of a Federal amended return, you do NOT use the regular IRS "Where's My Refund" tool, which is for original refunds only.    And you do NOT need to know the refund amount from your amended return.   The correct tool linked below does not ask for the amended refund amount.  It only asks for SSN, date of birth, and zip code.

NOTE:   You can start checking the status of an amended return around 3 weeks after you submit it.

But be aware that processing of an amended normally takes 8-12 weeks, but can take up to 16 weeks.

Did you also have a state amended return?   How to check on it will depend on which state it is.  See if there is any info on checking on an amended state return when you use the state refund lookup tool, or in the FAQ section of your state tax refund website.    If necessary, you can phone your state's department of revenue.
