I got my second stimulus via direct deposit. My third payment was scheduled to be deposited to a checking account i have never heard of? What's going on?

The 3rd stimulus payment will be deposited to bank information on your most recently filed income tax (2020) return.  If you haven't filed, IRS will use your 2019 bank information on file. The IRB never inform taxpayers through mail or email the date of the stimulus check deposit. You may call the IRS @ 1-800-829-1040 for check verification or visit theTax Advocate website.

Yes this information is on the irs website..the get my payment tool. It shows a account number ( last 4 digits) of a account I have never had. My bank information has not changed, and is the same from 2019 and my already filled taxes for 2020.

You should not have any concerns, especially since you are using the same bank account.  There is information posted here to help you should you need it later, but for now you may need to wait for a while longer.

This year has brought challenges. The IRS is required to reconcile the tax returns and stimulus payments as well as working on the third stimulus payments due to the American Rescue Plan.  With the tax season and the changes taking place all at once, a delay should be expected for full payments. They want to be diligent and are required to follow any protocols they have been issued.  They will make any adjustments and additional payments as they complete the process.

To be proactive you will have this information below should you need it.

  •  Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS).
    • Select Contact Us, then select to download and complete Form 911, Request for TAS Assistance
    • If you have not opened a case with TAS, call 877-777-4778
    • TAS is an independent organization within the IRS. Their job is to ensure that every taxpayer is treated fairly and that you know and understand your rights.
  • For stimulus recovery and if you believe identity theft might be a possibility start identity theft actions to recover the stimulus payments you are entitled to.  If you have qualifying children/dependents on your tax return then you should receive the stimulus payments for those dependents.
