I forgot to file my 1099-G

Hi, I recently filed for my 2021 taxes now in 2024, but unfortunately I didn’t check my email for all of my 1099’s and I missed a 1099G from Unemployment.

Do I have to amend anything right now or how long do I have to wait for the IRS to provide an answer.

The return was e-file and accepted on April 13… And my 2022 and 2023 were already deposited into my account.

What should I do ?

"........And my 2022 and 2023 were already deposited into my account. "

If you used the current online software to prepare a 2021 return, the return is all wrong.  The online software can only be used for a 2023 return.   A 2021 return must be prepared using the 2021 CD/download software on a full PC or Mac, not on any kind of mobile device.

You say the return was e-filed and accepted, but it could not have been accepted if you already e-filed a 2023 return.   The IRS will not accept two tax returns from you in the same year.   If you are seeing "accepted" in your account it can only be for the 2023 return that you say you already received a refund for.   E-filing has been permanently closed for 2021 returns since October of 2022.   You cannot e-file a 2021 return.

Do not try to do anything else with the incorrect 2021 return.  Just abandon it.   You need the 2021 software and your 2021 return will have to be filed by mail.   When you re-do your 2021 return using the correct software you can also include the 1099G that you forgot to enter.

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2023 only.   Only a 2023 return can be prepared online and only a 2023 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2020, 2021, and  2022 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2020, 2021, or 2022  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

The site is glitching on me and will not let me edit to change one of my sentences to "The IRS will not accept two e-filed tax returns from you...."    You can mail more than one tax return if they are for different tax years, but it is impossible to e-file two tax returns using your SSN.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION

Unemployment compensation is taxable on your federal return.

You will have to enter a 1099G that is issued by your state.

Some states will mail out the 1099G.  Or you might need to go to your state’s unemployment website and use the password, etc. that you have been using to certify for weekly benefits to get your 1099G from the state’s site.

Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment

Go through the screens very carefully, making sure  to enter any federal/state tax you had withheld from the unemployment.

Most states with a state income tax do tax unemployment benefits

AL, CA, DC, NH, NJ, and PA  do not tax unemployment
