I forgot a w2 for a different state I worked in

I just got emailed another w2 for a job that I worked at in Kansas City MO and also lived in KCMO during the time. I’m currently living 15min down the road but now I’m in Overland Park Kansas. Can I file another return because it’s a different state and I was living there? (I don’t know much about taxes) also turbo gives me the option to add another states tax right now, should I file my Missouri state taxes, or just wait and amend them, because I would need to file federal for Missouri?

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until late February.

Thank you you’re a life saver because I got close to finishing Missouri but decided to wait, I have another question hoping you might have the answer. How do I go about contacting someone for my state return the past two years, MO owes me around 4k and I’ve emailed tried calling and they’re website just says it’s still pending.

If I understand your original question, you lived in Missouri for part of the year and lived in Kansas for the rest of the year.

You worked in Missouri while living in MO and worked in Kansas while living in KS. In that case, you will file part-year MO and KS returns.

As to your other question about contacting someone about two years of Missouri refunds, unfortunately, you’ll have to contact the Missouri Department of Revenue. It’s unusual your return is still processing after two years.

Their website says you can schedule a call.
