Form 1095-B is not an issue. Form 1095-B provides information about the individuals in your tax family (yourself, spouse, and dependents) who had certain health coverage for some or all months during the year. This does not have to be entered on your taxes.
However, you said that your wife got a 1095-A. The affordable care act is based on household income. If you only factored in her income and didn't include yours it would explain why you ended up owing additional taxes.
When you fill out a health insurance application and use some tools on this website, you’ll need to estimate your expected income. Two important things to know:
Thanks for your reply. Does it make a difference if we just got married in January 2022? That’s why she had her own insurance for one month of 2022, then I got her added to my health insurance which is company provided.
No, the fact that you got married January 2022 and that is the reason your wife had a government plan (Form 1095-A), for one month, doesn't matter.
Don't amend your income tax return for Form 1095-B. It's for informational purposes. Just keep it with your tax records.
Thank you.
When you entered your wife's 1095-A (with only 1 month reported, leave other areas blank), did you indicate in the follow-up questions that you got married in 2022?
Per Expert RaifH:
"TurboTax will do the alternate year of marriage calculation behind the scenes if you tell it to:
Once you have entered that information, TurboTax will automatically apply the calculation that yields a better result. It will not show its work if the alternate calculation does not yield a better result. As I said above, if 4.25% of your family's total income exceeds the annual SLCSP premiums and half your income is more than 400% of the federal poverty level, it is unlikely that the alternate calculation will lead to a better result, even if you currently have to repay the entire advanced premium tax credit."
