I am not exempt and I have no children yet my tax return is still very low. Why ?

Your tax return is the Form 1040 you will send to the IRS.  Do you mean your refund is low?   We cannot see your tax return.  If you are single, your standard deduction is $13,850.  That first $13,850 is "tax free" but the rest of your income is taxable.  If you did not have enough tax withheld from your paychecks then your refund will be low---or you could even owe.
