Your question "How do you amend a 1040X..." sounds like you already amended a tax return and now want to amend the amended return.  Is that really what you mean?   A 1040X is an amended return---Form 1040X is the form you use when you amend a return.   If you mean that you filed an original return and need to make a change---wait for the first return to be fully processed, THEN prepare a Form 1040X to amend it and add the information about the real estate sale.  You do not mention if you sold a primary residence, a second home, a rental property, etc.

And if you really mean you need to make changes to a return that you already amended using a 1040X---WAIT for the original and amended returns to be fully processed or you will create confusion with the IRS that will delay processing for heaven knows how long.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-a...

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take five months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

Regardless of the reason for amending,

the procedure is always the same

-

  • start with return originally filed.
  • enter AMEND command
  • make revisions as necessary
  • print and carefully review Form 1040-X for accuracy.
