Unfortunately, once your e-filed return has been accepted or you already mailed it, it's too late to change your refund. There is one exception: If you chose to apply this year's refund to next year's taxes, you can request a check refund instead.
The IRS recommends checking where's my refund for status of your refund: https://www.irs.gov/Refunds
So would there be anyway to at least receive a paper check and stop payment on the direct deposit?
No.
If your direct deposit is rejected because the account is no longer active, the deposit will be rejected and the IRS will automatically issue you a paper check and mail it to the address on the tax return filed.
