How can I fix a state return when it needs information from a previous return that was never filed?

I didn't file the state return from 2022 yet. It is  from a non-resident state and I wasn't sure how to do it. I am trying to complete it this year but it needs information from last year that I don't have.

Most tax returns stand alone for each year, so not sure what info is needed from your 2022 state return in order to prepare your 2023 state return.

You will need to purchase/install TurboTax 2022 to prepare a state return (or use a free service).

In any case, here's info on How to File a Non-Resident State Return for 2023.

Thanks for your reply. I am using the turbo tax software online and on form 760-C Line 3  it is asking me to fill in prior year tax liability. However I am not sure how to find that information.

You are in the underpayment penalty form. You may be able to get out of the penalty depending on your income and tax from the prior year. So, you can go back to the year before and look for the tax liability or you can choose  to pay a penalty.

If you did not file a tax return for the prior year because you did not live there, mark zero. If you should have filed a return and didn't. you will need to pay any penalty.

Here are the instructions.
