How can I edit my filed return, not mailed yet?

@kimanitaxreturn
 You called it a "filed return".   But that's confusing, since you said it hasn't been mailed yet.  If you're filing by mail and haven't actually mailed it, it would not yet be a "filed" return.  So do you mean a completed but not filed return?

So please clarify what you mean by that.   The answer I provided below assumes you haven't yet filed anything since you said "not mailed yet."

If you have not actually filed (have not efiled and have not mailed), you can try this method to open your return back up,  but you may hit a roadblock.  There is a current "bug" for some users who get an error message saying it is too early to "amend".  But this is NOT amending.   If you hit the roadblock, report back.   Whatever you do, do not click on any link to "amend."

  • At the Tax Home page scroll down to "Your Tax Returns & Documents."  Expand that section.
  • Choose 2018 tax year.
  • Click on "Add a State."  (you don't really add one.  That's just to open your return back up.)
  • Once open you can edit your unfiled return, and even change the filing method, if desired.
