Question

help with ex- filing separately

My (now) ex and I were legally married through 2020.  I filed my taxes and forgot to check the places to show where she would be filing her taxes separately and also claiming her daughter.  I ended up filing an amended return a couple of days ago that fixed it.  She is still saying that her filing is being rejected.  I sent her a Form  8332 and signed it so that it helps "release" me from claiming the daughter.

The weird part is that we were a blended family.  I have and adopted daughter and my ex- has an adopted daughter.  We both were able to claim the girls on our returns.  I did not get a chance to adopt her daughter and my daughter has a mother who still has parental rights.  What else do I need to do to help my ex- file her tax return and be able to claim her daughter?

How did you file your original return?  Did you file it as Joint?  So you amended it to separate?  If you were still married on Dec 31, 2020 you could still file Joint.  If you originally filed Joint she will have to print and mail her return this year.  Even if you amend to Separate her ssn  has already been used and she can't efile it again.

Originally I started off as married filing separately, which then TT changed to Head of Household (even with the amended file, my daughter qualified me as filing HoH).  As stated, I originally forgot to "check the box" that she was filing separately and claiming her daughter.  I fixed that in my amended filing.  She already knows she has to paper file, and I provided a signed Form 8332 that I released my claiming of the daughter.  Shouldn't she just be able to paper file with her info and the 8332 and it work?

I believe I don't have to provide any other info or copies of anything...?

I wonder why she can't efile?  What is the reject message?  Oh because she is filing the same child ssn on her return?  Yes she can paper file and mail her return.
