Why do you think the request is frivolous? If the IRS wants to see a copy of a wage and income statement that you said you received from an employer, the IRS has that right. Perhaps they have discovered a discrepancy between the amount you put on your return and the amount reported by the employer.
Check again, I think you misread, IRS usually asks for the last three paystubs.
your year-end paystub and W-2 should show total withholding from that employer which is what IRS is looking for.
