Even though the IRS issues 9 out of 10 tax refunds within 21 days, it's possible your return may require additional review and take longer to process.

  • For some taxpayers, PATH Act requirements and other identity-protection safeguards implemented by the IRS may account for longer wait times.
  • Other things that can delay your refund include, but are not limited to:
  • Liens, back taxes, or refund offsets
  • Errors, inconsistencies, or missing information
  • Identity fraud
  • Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, which can take 11-14 weeks to process
  • Also, if you chose direct deposit, your financial institution may need another day or two to post the refund to your account, so keep that in mind.

I’m not asking abt refund status. I’m asking is there a reason my refund still shows pending and not received by the IRS

The status should update in approximately 24-48 hours but it could be longer. Unfortunately, once the return is submitted, TurboTax has no control over how fast the return is accepted. You should receive an email and/or text confirmation once the return is accepted.

I too have been in pending status for the 2.5 months. I have never had this issue before. I think there's a bigger issue than just the generic answer of it takes a few weeks to get your refund. It shouldn't take 2.5 months to process an electronic return!

**NOTE*** Due to the Corona virus 10 week shutdown the IRS is operations are still very limited. Any tax return that requires hand processing will probably have long delays. Mailed returns were not being processed and there is a huge backlog. Most phone service remains limited.

I was finally able to find out they pulled by return because they were checking for identity theft. But because the IRS mailrooms are closed and I was never mailed a letter telling me the processing had stopped, I spent 4.5 hours trying to reach the right person to release the hold on my return. Once that happened I had my refund in 10 days.
