If you file before February 15, you're owed a tax refund and you're claiming either the ACTC or EITC, your entire refund will be withheld until at least the February 15 deadline. This delay allows the IRS time to match information from individual tax returns with information on the W-2 forms from employers, which are sent to the IRS by January 31, as a way of preventingdentify theft and fraud.
The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or debit cards starting February 28, 2023, if these taxpayers chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.
This concerns only returns claiming the Earned income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax credit (ACTC), but not those only claiming the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
Please read this IRS document for more information.
