Error on taxes

I filed the taxes of a friend of mine using TurboTax. I made an error. For the question: are you a citizen? I said yes. The problem is that it actual misread the rest of the question that stated a citizen who lived in the above countries. Saying yes, gave a refund of $7000 instead of $143. Its did not hit me because I was aware that this year would be offset by the $6000 or $12000 Social security credit. I picked up the error when I did my own taxes. How do I correct? Online (AI?) said wait until my friend got her refund and they return it with a 1040X. Should I wait or file a 1040x now?

The IRS will catch the error and correct the tax return.  If taxes are owed the IRS will be send a notice to the address on the tax return.

Just wait.   The IRS has been catching that and adjusting the refund or will send a bill.   You don’t have to amend.   A lot of people have been answering that wrong.

When you apologize to your friend, be sure to stress that he/she should not spend the $7,000 refund until the IRS fixes the return or until you have had a chance to amend it (if DoninGA is right, then you won't have to amend it, but you need to watch this carefully in any case).
