Due to audit - error on 2012 taxes, I paid the taxes due as a result of the audit in 2016

Do I need to report the payment I made in 2016 on my 2016 return (for the taxes due in 2012)

If the audit was on your 2012 1040, then you can't deduct federal taxes paid.

If the audit was on your 2012 state return, then you may qualify to take those taxes as a deduction on your Schedule A.

To do so:

  1. Go to Deductions & Credits

  2. Select I'll choose what I work on

  3. Go to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

  4. Select Start or Update by Other Income Taxes.

  5. Go to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2016

  6. Click Start or Update by Payments for 2014 or a prior year state or local income taxes paid in 2016

That amount gets carried to your Schedule A, State and Local Taxes Paid.  You can only claim these payments if you itemize in 2016.
