Do I need to file an amended return if I selected full year health coverage for myself and my dependent but I only had half year and my dependent had full year coverage?

I believe I would still be exempt from the penalty however does this mean I need to file an amended return?

Not necessarily.  If you would have been exempt anyway, there would be no amounts to amend.  Here is a link from the IRS that may help you determine your status:  https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/affordable-care-act-estimator-tools.
