If the tax return has been rejected by the IRS, you do NOT amend the tax return.  You fix any errors and then e-file the tax return again.

It is too soon to amend your return. ‌You should wait until the return is fully processed.‌ If you are expecting a refund and are amending for an additional refund, the IRS states you should wait until you've received the original refund. Then, you can amend as soon as the federal amended tax return form 1040-X is available for filing in TurboTax.  Use this tool to check availability of forms, including 1040X: Tax form availability

If the tax return has been accepted then you will have to amend the return to add, edit or delete any information.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

Note - The Form 1040-X for amending a 2025 tax return is estimated to be finalized and available in TurboTax on 02/19/2026.
