I'm thinking about making the switch next year from the CD version to the online version. Are there disadvantages to this? Will I be able to do mine, my significant other's, and her parents returns this way or will I have to pay three times for use of the software on line?

You are correct, the CD version is the best option for your situation.

With the online version, each person would have to create an account and therefore there would be additional charges for each person with the online version.
