Can I edit my Federal tax return

If you are needing to make a correction, you will need to wait until your e-file is Accepted and then you will Amend your return.  To do this, please review the FAQ here.

Can I edit my Federal tax return

I want to edit my "Cash charitable contribution" prior to filing. There seems to be no way to do this. I did not itemize my charitable contributions, but there was a question about "cash" contributions, where I could claim up to $300 deduction. I answered it incorrectly and would simply like to change my answer. How can I find this question again in order to change the answer. I have not filed my taxes yet.

Can I edit my Federal tax return

Yes, you can edit your income tax return prior to e-filing or mailing.

  1. To manually enter your charitable donations directly into TurboTax:
    1. Open your return in TurboTax.
    2. In the search box, search for donations and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
    3. Answer No when asked if you have an ItsDeductible account (even if the answer is yes).
    4. Answer Yes to Do you want to enter your donations for 2020?
    5. Follow the instructions to enter your donations.

For 2020, there's a special provision on your federal income tax return. Even if you don’t itemize, you may take a charitable deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made in 2020 to qualified organizations.

  •  Under this new change, individual taxpayers can claim an "above-the-line" deduction of up to $300 for cash donations made to charity during 2020.
  • This means the deduction lowers both adjusted gross income and taxable income – translating into tax savings for those making donations to qualifying tax-exempt organizations.

When your federal adjusted income transfers to your Iowa state income tax return, it is net of the $300 so TurboTax adjusts and adds the $300 back into Iowa income. The $300 is an "above the line" deduction on your federal income tax return but not an "above the line" deduction on your IA state income tax return.
