I am filing electronically my taxes, but when I am ready to pay for the State refund fee of $19.99 is also adding the Audit Defense fee of $49.99, even though I unchecked the box every time, I tried to file TurboTax keeps asking for a method of payment for this fee. Is this a glitch that needs to be reviewed and updated?

These solutions do not work! I have also been on the phone with Tech Support and they also have no solution. There is a glitch int the systems that is effectively holding us for ransom to e-file our taxes. They are essentially forcing us to purchase Audit Defense at $45 before we can proceed. SURELY there are enough users having this same problem that it warrants Intuits attention. I simply do not know how to get them to listen. Any ideas?

Clear your return and start over.
If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2019 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.
The instruction at the link you provided do not apply to the desktop version. Please indicate that version that you are dealing with before sending users to a link that does not apply to all users.
For the Desktop program there is a fee to efile a state return. Then if you want to have the fee deducted from your federal refund there is an extra 39.99 Refund Processing Service charge (44.99 in California). You can pay the fee with a credit card to avoid the extra charge. Or print and mail state for free.
Go back through the File tab slowly and watch the screens and be careful what you click on. There is one screen that can trip you up. I think people get going too fast at the end to file and don't pay attention to what they are clicking on to continue.
In California Desktop program to remove Audit Defense and Premium Services you have to change to pay the 24.99 state efile fee by credit card and not by having it deducted from your federal refund. Or print and mail state for free. Go back through the File tab again and change to pay with a credit card. Then if Audit Defense is still there you can remove it.
How can I opt out of audit defense on my Indiana return? I don't use Turbo Tax online.
You can remove this by removing MAX. To do this, please see our Help Article.
