Amendment

I have never received any of the COVID stimulus checks. I filed with Turbotax Deluxe as head of household for 2019 and have 1 dependent and met the income threshold. Someone at my congressman's office got me in touch with someone at the IRS and she told me it was because I claimed zero on my 2020 taxes which she said means someone else can claim me (no one did). I didn't even know I claimed zero. She said I need to file an amendment.  I got a 1040x but I can't tell what I am supposed to put on there to file the amendment. Is there anyone who knows about this who can help me? @DavidD66 @ReneeM7122 @MaryM428 @Cynthiad66

You can claim your first 2 stimulus checks as the Rebate Recovery Credit on your 2020 return.  If you haven't filed your 2020 return yet, use the steps below.

If you have already filed your 2020 return, you can amend it using the steps in this TurboTax Help article:

How do I amend my 2020 return?  If you e-filed your original 2020 return, you can also e-file the amended return.

This credit will allow you to get any stimulus money you're still owed—you'll just get it as a credit on your tax return instead of a separate payment.

To do this in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Enter the information in your return.
  2. Click Federal Review at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen, Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to. This will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

Thank you Irene, I have not filed for 2020 yet so I will follow these directions when I do. So it does not matter that I "claimed zero"? I don't even know what she was talking about. @Irene2805

Amendment

Assuming they are referring to claiming zero on your W-4, it would not have an impact on your Recovery Rebate Credit.  As long as you follow the steps by Irene2805 above, your return will be prepared to include the Recovery Rebate Credit as applicable.

The credit is intended to give those who should have received a stimulus payment but never did a tax credit on their tax returns.  Any excess credit is then refunded to you if there is an overpayment on your tax return.

Please see the attached link for more information on who can claim the credit.
