Hi!
I forgot to check the box that someone can claim me as a dependent on my original file. On 4/3 I completed the amendment form and was accepted federally (I understand I have to mail in state amendments). However, when my spouse tried to file his taxes on 4/6 claiming me as a dependent, he keeps getting a rejection message that says “ Reject Code IND-517-01” that basically means I’ve already claimed myself as primary and not a dependent.
How do I get my significant other’s taxes accepted when federally my amendment was already accepted?
Thanks in advance.

Your spouse will not be able to e-file his tax return. He has to print his tax return, sign it, and file it by mail. Even though your amended return was accepted, the IRS will not update their files to allow your spouse to e-file.
I don't understand exactly what you and your spouse are trying to do. You can never claim your spouse as a dependent. Your spouse cannot claim you as a dependent. If you are married, the two of you should be filing one combined tax return together, for both of you, as married filing jointly. The only way you can file separate tax returns is if you both file as married filing separately. But if your spouse is filing as married filing separately, it wouldn't matter if you didn't say that you could be claimed as a dependent. (Also, filing as married filing separately will most likely make you pay more tax than if you filed jointly.)
You and your spouse might need to consult a local tax professional to discuss what you are trying to accomplish.
Thanks for your reply. We are not married. Just live in the same house and I’m a full time student so he has been supporting me financially for 2 years now. We get more back from the federal government if he claims me as a dependent.
If you are not married, then he is not your spouse. A spouse is someone you are married to. So disregard all but the first paragraph of my earlier reply above. If you have any more tax questions, please be accurate in describing your relationship. It makes a difference where taxes are concerned.
