have not filed yet.  Need to correct the NJ tax withholding.  It's find on the Federal section but carried over to the state section exactly double what it should be.

If you haven't filed the state return yet, don't.

FIX the state return, then file it.

If you need to get back into your return, select "Add a State" to reopen the return, then make the adjustment.

It doesn't allow me to fix the state return.  That's what I'm trying to find out.  How do I fix the state withholding if it doesn't allow me to change it?  It's correct under where you put in the W-2, and it is the correct amount under the Federal return, but when you get to the State part, the state withholding is doubled.  I even tried to take the state out and put it back in, but that didn't work.

Since both re-visiting Form W-2 and deleting/re-adding the state did not work, check what has been entered in the state taxes reported in Deductions & Credits.

To do this in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  • From the left menu, select Federal.
  • Across the top, there are four tabs. Select Deductions & Credits.
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid and Show More.
    • Check the entries in Estimated Tax Payments related to state and/or local taxes.
      • State estimated taxes for 220
      • Local estimated taxes for 2020
      • 2019 state estimated taxes paid in 2020
      • 2019 local estimated taxes paid in 2020
