Amending return

Hello, I already e-filed my taxes and got my return but a new W2 came in the mail. It’s from an employer that I did NOT work for in 2019 but did receive a severance from in the beginning of 2019. I’m assuming that’s what it’s for? How do I go about adding that to my return this year? I read that I would have to submit an amendment form. But where can I access that and how do I send it in? Also, will it effect the money I already got back? Thanks!

You will have to amend.

The 1040X becomes available later in February, so you have to wait for it.

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

Thanks! Will it effect the money I already got back? Should I not touch that money until I get the return from the amended return?

No, you’re free to use the refund that you’ve already received.

Bear in mind, however, that if your amended return results in a balance due to the IRS, you’ll need to be able to pay that amount, so plan your finances accordingly.
