I had to amend my 2023 return because I received a 1099-DIV and a K-1 form AFTER I had filed my original 2023 return. The additional $3309 of income from these two sources resulted in my owing $637 in additional tax, which I paid with my 1st amendment, which I filed by mail on 10 April 2024 and was received by the IRS.
While working on my 2024 return, I discovered an error in my 2023 return that taxed $13321 in "excess contributions" to my wife's IRA, which in fact we had already fixed by distributing that amount in 2022 and reported on our 2022 return. This error resulted in $794 (6%) in additional tax on 2023 Form 5329. So I am now trying to amend my amended 2023 return to fix this error and get that $794 back. This is my 2nd amendment of the 2023 return.
However, when I entered the TurboTax file remaining from the 1st amendment (I failed to keep a copy of the original return) and manually modified the entry on line 9 (Part III) of Form 5329, TurboTax still showed the additional income from the 1st amendment and the tax due on it, as if I had never filed that 1st amendment and paid the $637 due. So instead of getting back the $794 I'm owed for the error, TT is showing that I will only get back $135, the net of the additional tax I already paid in April 2023 and the $794 refund I'm owed for my "excess contributions" error.
Unfortunately, I didn't keep a copy of my TT file after the 1st amendment, though I saved a PDF of it; I only have the TT file with the changes I made manually to the 2023 Form 5329.
How do I convince TT that I've already paid the tax on the increased income from the 1099-DIV and K-1, or alternatively that my 2nd amendment only involves the change to Form 5329 and no changes to income (but of course reflecting the additional income due to the 1st amendment)? I probably could manually modify the current state of my 2023 TT file to "undo" the 2nd amendment changes to Form 5329, if re-creating the TT file as of the 1st amendment is desirable.
Thanks!
