Amended tax return, adding a 1099-NEC?

Hi all,

I recently realized that I need to amend my 2020 tax return. I have only ever received W2s, so I am unfamiliar with how to report income as an independent contractor. In 2020 I received $200 from a university as an honorarium for a speaking event. I never received a 1099-NEC from the university (even though I filled out a W-9). I assume this is because I was paid less than $600. Anywho, I'm trying to go about the process of amending my 2020 tax return. I am using software to make the changes (I know it needs to be mailed to the IRS), and it looks like I can fill out a 1099-NEC to report the income, but there are all these boxes to fill out like the payer TIN, which I can't accurately fill out, because I never received a 1099!

OR... Do I record this information as "Profit from business" Schedule C. I don't have a business!

Thank you for any advice!

Put the $200 under Miscellaneous income. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Federal section
  2. Scroll down to Less Common Income
  3. Select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C selection
  4. Select Other Reportable Income,  START
  5. Any other taxable income, select YES
  6. Enter description, something like speaking engagement
  7. Enter the amount in the box next to your name.
  8. Click Continue

Thanks!

Also, I assume I'll have to submit an amended state tax return as well. Would I submit submit that for the state where I live (and the work took place) even though the paying University is from another state?

Yes, you should include this on an amended state return as well for your resident state.  You include the income on the state return where you physically performed the services. In your case you worked where you live.
