Amended Return

I filed my 2022 return in March of 23, but it hasn't been accepted by the IRS, the state amended the return on their own and refunded me. This year my wife does my amended return for me and now I owe almost $4,000 to the irs and the state. If the state themselves did my return and refunded me, then how do I now owe money?

    Just to be clear:

    • You've submitted a federal amended return, but it has not been accepted or processed to your knowledge.
    • You had your state calculate an amended return, and you got a refund.
    • Your wife prepared an amended return, and you calculated that you owe money.

Before you file anything I suggest you contact your state Department of Revenue to determine what it is that they prepared and what was included.

Since I don't know what state your in.

This is a list of Department of Revenue by state  List of state DOR's.

In addition, contact the IRS to determine what the status of the original amended return is.  If they cross paths, there  could be problems.

You can call toll-free at 800-829-1040 or contact a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office.

It;a common to see proplems with TurboTax amendment.

Sometimes it just doesn't work correctly

please print and review your 1040-X carefully particularly the lines for tax already paid or refundend to you.
