Amended Form 1940X

So, I just filed an amended form 1040 X paying additional taxes that I did not include in my original filing a form 1040.
Status was married jointly on original return. All calculations on form 1040 X are for Married jointly status, Which is my correct status. I mistakenly checked the box marries filing separately on the amended return. Don’t know what to do?

Why did you file the amendment?

Had a stock transaction I did not include on original return. Additional tax was due

Since you filed the return you need to wait until it is processed before you do anything else.  Once the amended return has gone through and the payment has left your bank account you can go in and amend your amendment to change your marital status back to MFJ.  That status change shouldn't effect the amount that you owe in any way but it let's the IRS keep your marital status straight which can be a big deal depending on the state that you live in.

Thank you for that information. I was concerned that IRS would re-calculate the tax based on Married Separately.

So, once my check clears and Form 1040X is processed, I should file a second Form 1040X, and only change would be Filing status....correct?

Have you seen anything like this before?

Thank you!

Yes.  This kind of thing happens all of the time.
