Amended Federal Return Rejected because it says I did not efile 1040

I submitted my 1040 and it was accepted by the IRS on the 4th. I realized that I forgot a small w-2. I followed the steps to do an amended return. I am trying to electronically file the 1040X but it says I did not efile my original 1040 return but I did. Is there a box somewhere that is not checked? I am not trying to efile my state, nor did I efile the original state return, just the federal. Any ideas? (I am on the desktop version)

Yes - wait.  Give it some time before you file the amended return - at least until after you have received your refund.  It is possible that the IRS will fix this mistake for you and just adjust your return.

I owe money, no refund. I am going out of country and must file now. I printed paper copy and am mailing payment. Turbo Tax customer service is very lacking.

This is a nasty bug.

Did you select Federal Return Only when you went to submit the 1040-X ?

It depends. The accepted return may not be in the IRS data base yet even though the return is accepted. I would give it a few days especially if your original return was recently accepted.
