Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

It depends. Does the refund monitor at the top of the page show the correct amount?

Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

It shows $0, but I would expect it to show $1,800 after claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit.  Should it be reflected in the refund monitor?

Thanks for your help.

Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

Yes, it would be reflected in the refund monitor at the top of your screen. When you select the option to amend your already filed return - be sure to go through the entire questionnaire so that you are certain to make any/all changes necessary - and that you do not miss the section pertaining to the recovery rebate credit. Once you get to that section, be sure to answer as you should have the first time around and you'll then see the amount that you should have received but did not receive then populated. You will need to go through the whole process so that the system has a chance to calculate everything properly - this will ensure that it all gets added up right. For a "double-check", you can click on the "forms mode" icon at the top right of the screen once you are all done (at the end of your return, just before you e-file) and view your Federal 1040x to see the credit listed there.

Do we have to mail in the amended state return still?

Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

I want to know this as well, just to be sure. Nothing was changed I don't believe. Do we still have to mail the state amended one if you changed your status from "can be listed as a dependent" to not?

When will the electronic submission for the amended return be available?

Amend return to claim Recovery Rebate credit

I was able to file my federal amended return electronically with the RRC and it was accepted within an hour through turbo tax. It should ask you about the stimulus checks before final review.

You can only file federal amended returns electronically if you did your original federal return electronically. I have not been able to do my state amended electronically even though it says I’m owed a difference for the dependence status change but OH (state filed in) has a relatively easy amended process. It does state a lot longer though for paper to be processed so I have been holding off.

Just solved this problem for my friend who recently filed and forgot to request the recovery rebate credit for her child. She received $1200 for her plus $500 for her child on the first round. On the second round she received $600 but nothing for her child. This is what you can do.

1) Start new return

2) Click on "Amend a Filed Return"

3) Browse and navigate to your original return

4) Save it with a new name that includes "Amended" so you don't get confused.

5) Then click continue and answer if had filed already, In her case she had filed.

6) Click I need to amend my 2020 tax return, the amount on the top bar changes to $0

7) Click on "Federa Taxes" tab, then click on "Federal Review" button

😎 Answer Yes or No, did you get a first or second stimulus

9) If "No" confirm it, if you received it but with the wrong amounts "click Yes" then, "No" and enter the amounts received.

10) It will show you the credit you should have received but the refund amount on the top didn't change right. That's where the workaround comes in.

11) Click on the "Forms" button in the blue bar.

12) Click on "1040X" on the left side menu and scroll to the box titled " Manual Selection of Lines Calculated Smart Worksheet.

13) Click the little box "E" (Lines 10-23 -- Payments and Refundable credits.

14) And Bravo! the refund amount will appear on top and you can click back on the "Step-by-Step button to finish your Amended Returns.

Good luck

I have the same problem. I filed my taxes on Feb 12 and my check was mailed out Feb 2. But the post office returned it to the IRS. I don't know what to do. I desperately need that money. and I have yet to receive my third stimulus as well.

You should consider ordering a payment trace on the third stimulus check that was sent, but unable to be delivered.

Per the IRS, you should only request a payment trace to track your payment if Get My Payment shows a payment was issued to you and you have not received it within the timeframes below. IRS assistors cannot initiate a payment trace unless it has been:

  • 5 days since the deposit date and the bank says it hasn't received the payment
  • 4 weeks since the payment was mailed by check to a standard address
  • 6 weeks since the payment was mailed, and you have a forwarding address on file with the local post office
  • 9 weeks since the payment was mailed, and you have a foreign address

To start a payment trace:

  • Call us the IRS at 800-919-9835
  • Mail or fax a completed Form 3911

Please see Questions and Answers about the Third Economic Impact Payment — Topic J: Payment Issued but Lost, St... for detailed IRS instructions.

Under the "amend" and "cacncel amend" you'll see, Tax Tools.

Under tax tools go to topic search,

where you can then type in "stimulus" and click "go".

It should take you directly to the recovery rebate credit option.

If you go to the search bar and type in "stimulus" on your amendment, you can "jump to" the section and report that you did not receive payments yet. Worked for me!
