Amend Federal and State return - Backdoor Roth IRA

Hi all,

After I filed my 2024 taxes, I realized I never contributed to my Roth IRA. My key question is related to how to update my state tax returns on turbotax and for which state.

Details of current state:

  • I completed contribution to Roth IRA  via backdoor Roth on April 1 2025 for tax year 2024. Traditional IRA started and ended at $0. This all occurred in 2025. I understand I will receive my 1099-R in 2025 and I will show the conversion for 2024 and 2025 to Roth IRA when I file for Tax year 2025.

  • I was able to amend my Federal Return through TurboTax to generate 8606 and I e-filed an amended return. It was already accepted by the IRS as of today 4/3. I don't believe I have further action on the Federal return.
  • I was a partial resident in NY and then later moved to NJ in February 2024. As of  December 31st, 2024, I am NJ resident and currently NJ resident.
    • My Backdoor Roth IRA contribution and conversion all occurred while I am a NJ resident on April 1st 2025 as noted above.
  • I spoke with a turbo tax expert today on 4/3/25 and they advised I do not need to submit an amended state tax return to show the Traditional IRA contribution, but this did not sound right to me.
    • As of now, I have not submitted any Amended State returns, but I have submitted an amended Federal return.

Key Questions:

  • For my state returns, do I need to submit an amended Tax return for each state (New York and New Jersey) even though I am currently a NJ resident and all contributions were made in 2025 while I am a NJ resident.
    • I ask this because I was a partial NY resident, but unsure if NY will need to see this as I won't need to file a 2025 NY state return.
  • If I need to submit a NY or NJ amended state tax return to show the tradition IRA contribution, how do I go about showing this? I do not see this on the state amended forms.

  • Since I already submitted my Amended Federal return, may have I some advise on how I can amend just my state returns?

  • Any other things I need to keep in mind while I go through this process?

Thank you!!!

Amend Federal and State return - Backdoor Roth IRA

Posting a potential answer as this has gone unanswered in about a week.

I've spoken with a number of Turbotax representatives, experts and specialists. I called in a few times to speak to specialists, experts and walked through a screenshare with at least one specialist and an expert reviewed my return.

The feedback from experts and specialists (as recently as April 7th, 2025 after a specialist escalated to an expert so the expert can double check) is that the Backdoor Roth (specifically Traditional IRA contribution before conversion to a Roth) does not need to be reported at the state level because my income is too high and my taxable income will not change. The contribution and conversion is considered a non-deductible, non-taxable contribution.

Consistent Turbotax feedback has been that I only needed to amend the Federal return to generate the 8606.

When I file for tax year 2025, I will try to post an update if I run into issues.

"I do not need to submit an amended state tax return to show the Traditional IRA contribution, "

Correct. That doesn't go on a NJ tax return. NJ requires you to keep history of your contributions in your own records for later.
