I filed my federal return but realized I made an error before manually filing my state return. I'm amending the federal return. Do I need to file an amended state return? If not, how do I indicate in the desktop version that it isn't an amended state return?

Since you have not filed your state return yet, you don't need to amend your state return. If the error only affects your federal return, you can file the original state return you have, assuming no change on it.
The change to the federal return does impact the state return. Hoping to file only one state return and not have to file the original and an amended return.
You can amend your Federal return.
Please see this Turbo Tax FAQ on when to amend.
