Added a wrong W-2

I added my 2020 W-2 to the year 2021. I try to change the information and delete the 2020 W-2 and adding all my 2021 to the new filing but now it shows I owe $1,029 in federal and $253 for state. My income was less than 2020 so I’m confused why I owe more money and it doesn’t show any refund amount. Any help with this. I can’t find an option to change the federal tax portion , only state.

The general rule is that you do not amend until the original return is processed by the IRS.   It appears you e-filed your original return on 3/5/2022 and then you filed an amended return on 3/6/2022.  This may cause some significant delays and confusion if your amended return ends up being processed before the original return.

I am unable to really give you an explanation of why you went from a refund to owing if your income was less.  You stated ". . .  adding all my 2021 to the new filing . . ."   Was your total 2021 income more than your total 2020 income.  Was there a significant difference in the amount of withholdings from 2020 to 2021?  The amendment is assuming you received a refund already and if you owe it is going to show that you have to pay back the refund that you received since you would not be entitled to the refund.

At this point my recommendation is that you wait for the IRS to process the original and amendment and hope that the returns are processed in the proper order.  Once you receive the letter from IRS reviewing the information provided and see if you agree with the analysis by the IRS.   So that you can determine whether or not the IRS letter is correct or that you agree or disagree, I would suggest that you start a new return and enter all your information as if you are doing it for the first time.   Compare these results with the IRS adjustments (letter).

If you disagree with the outcome of the IRS processing of your original and amended return.   You may need to seek a tax professional to help you get this resolved correctly.   If you purchased the Max Protection with your return, you should contact TurboTax and they will put you in contact with the audit defense group.
