Inheritances are usually not reportable on a tax return unless they are reported to you on a 1099-R or a K-1 that would be sent after Jan 31, for 2018.

A life insurance payout paid to the named beneficiary of the deceased is never taxable or reportable on any tax return.
However, any possible "earnings" that may have accumulated on that payout after the passing of the deceased, *is* taxable income to the beneficiary recipient. If this is your case, then you will be receiving a 1099-R from the company before the end of January.
